Walking
players will wish the 16th hole had a ski lift running up the side of the fairway after
playing it. 500 yards and uphill all the way, every shot on this hole feels like it's
straight up a mountain. Strategy will play a huge part of any success on 16, as most
mortals will need to play it as a three-shot par-5.
The rough that comes into play on the tee shot is deep enough to severely hamper your
2nd shot, so keep it in the fairway. The most important obstacle to avoid on the 2nd
shot is the weeping willow tree on the left side. It will knock down any ball that
comes near it and will force you to punch out from underneath on your next. If you hit
your 2nd shot right and long enough, there's another less formidable tree that might
cause you trouble as well.
The approach to the green is well protected by a bunker left and a steep downslope that
hugs the right side. As with most greens on the course, the 16th is pitched steeply
from back to front, so keep it below the hole. Surviving the 16th with par is an
accomplishment.
