If there is such a thing as a
breather hole at Stanford Golf Course, the fifth hole just may qualify. The most benign par-4 on the front
side, the tee shot can be played nearly straight away, but longer hitters should favor the right side to
cut the corner off this slightly uphill dogleg right.
For those playing the newly restored Championship tee, which
returned to its originally designed location in 2005, the hole plays much more straightaway, but you will certainly be faced
with a much longer approach shot.
The front of the green is guarded by large bunkers
on both sides, and the green slopes away from the player in the back left. A short iron will more than
likely be utilized for the approach, so get it close. The green is vast, and what you think could be be a
great shot from the fairway may well be 50 feet from the hole once you reach the putting surface.
