Russ served as a Golf Professional at Stanford Golf Course from 1991 to 1994 before traveling to Tokyo, Japan to compete on the Professional tour.
In Tokyo he founded the Vander Sluis Golf Academy, where he taught for six years, held golf clinics throughout Japan and Asia, and learned to teach golf in Japanese.
He re-joined the Stanford teaching staff in 2001.
Russ has a four-year teaching degree from Calvin University in Michigan.
